On Sunday, October 10th, the OU Student Chapter of SAME participated in the 6th annual Rebuilding Together Construction Derby in downtown Oklahoma City. The derby is a fund-raising event for Rebuilding Together OKC.
The vehicles racing had to incorporate at least four items commonly used to make home modifications and repairs in the homes of elderly homeowners in their construction. The entries used materials that included bathtubs, commodes, doors, grab bars, handrails, hand-held showers, shingles, and door knobs. The cars could not have motorized, mechanical, or fluid power of any kind.
In the double elimination event, the OU Student Chapter’s vehicle won three heats and lost two before being eliminated, placing them in the top half of participants.
The SAME OU Student Chapter’s racer is in the lead at the left above. For more pictures of the Student Chapter’s racer, click here.

As we kick off the new year, the OKC SAME Board is looking for ideas for upcoming programs. We would like to have programs that are of interest to the entire Post. If you have a topic that you would like to suggest, or a presentation that you would like to give, we would love to hear about it.
Because we need to cover certain topics to be eligible to meet streamer requirements, we are particularly interested in presentations in the following areas:

The Society of American Military Engineers offers a unique series of engineering camps designed for high school students who excel in math, science and technical courses and are interested in pursuing engineering in college. At SAME Engineering and Construction Camps, high school students from across the country and around the world learn engineering solutions and skills from a professional staff of engineers while getting a taste of what it means to work for and with the military services. Only at an SAME Engineering and Construction Camp can you design a chair with three legs and sit on it, construct a concrete beam and smash it, or build a cardboard boat and race it!
These exciting week-long camps take place during the summer months in a variety of settings—centered on a military base in the colorful Colorado Rockies, the beautiful Southern California Coast, or the historic Mississippi Valley.
Inherent in the mission of SAME is a duty to inspire the next generation of engineering and construction leaders. One of the most significant programs in support of this goal is the annual SAME Engineering & Construction Summer Camps, which are co-hosted each summer with the U.S. Navy Seabees at Port Hueneme, California, with the U.S. Army at Vicksburg, Mississippi, and with the U.S. Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs, Colorado.
The dates for this year’s camps are as follows:
U.S. Army Camp June 13-19, 2010 Vicksburg, Mississippi
U.S. Air Force Academy Camp June 25-July 1, 2010 Colorado Springs, Colorado
U.S. Navy Seabees Camp August 2-7, 2010 Port Hueneme, California
The Oklahoma City Post is seeking applicants (high school sophomores and juniors with a minimum GPA of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale) for the Air Force and Navy Camps. Additional information on the application process, as well as application forms, can be found at the Post News on our website or at the SAME National website at http://posts.same.org/camps.
We will select a primary and alternate from the best qualified of the applicants. The Post will pay the full registration fee and airfare if the student is accepted by the National SAME Camp Registrar. These applications are due to the OKLAHOMA CITY POST by March 19, 2010.
Please submit application to:
Randy Dubiskas, PG, CEM 405-869-6255
We also encourage qualified sophomores and juniors to apply for the U. S. Army Camp at Vicksburg, MS, but the application for that camp should be sent directly to the Army Camp registrar.
MENTORS
To become a Mentor, you must be an SAME Young Member with a record of active participation at the Post, Region, or National level; obtain an endorsement from the President of the SAME Post that will be sponsoring you; have experience in mentoring or coaching young people; commit to attending the entire week-long camp; be experienced in military, civil or environmental engineering, or a related field, in the public or private sector; and be physically fit and healthy.
Mentor application forms can be found at the Post News section of our Post website or at the SAME National website at http://posts.same.org/camps.
We will select a mentor from the best qualified of the applicants. The Post will pay the airfare if the mentor is accepted by the National SAME Camp Registrar. Mentor applications are due to the OKLAHOMA CITY POST by March 19, 2010.

SAME Engineering and Construction Camps offer SAME Young Members valuable opportunities to mentor tomorrow’s engineering leaders. Mentors assist with student activities, and teach students about real-world architecture, engineering, environmental science or other related disciplines in which they have experience. Mentors spend the week at the camp and are assigned to groups of students to help guide, train, educate, coach and lead the campers through each day’s activities.
